Parties
True story: A bunch of us were out on an island off the coast of Maine a couple of years ago for the 4th of July. We had chartered a little water taxi to beat the ferry-going crowd and were just settling in for a nice afternoon of live reggae music at a little outdoor bar on the ocean. Suddenly the door flies open, the ferry unloads roughly one billion people through the front door, and the party goes from zero to 60 in 4.6 seconds. Off-duty strippers stumble around in stilettos, rastafarians smoke the bejesus out of everything in sight, and college kids order beer by the case from the hopelessly out-numbered bartenders. At one point, I swear we saw Jeff Spicoli stagger past in a pair of checkerboard Vans.
As we kick back and watch the mayhem ensue, the reggae band works the crowd into a frenzy, the likes of which haven't been seen since the last installment of Girls Gone Wild. A cool breeze blows in off the water, a warm sun shines down, and we quickly realize we could be living the best day of our lives.
All this on a lazy Sunday in July?? You bet. Parties like this are going on all over the place all the time, and we've got the inside line on it all. Who knows what you might be missing this weekend . . .
